Robert Wickliffe Preston "Wick" Johnston, former associate editor of
The Blood-Horse and managing editor of
The Thoroughbred Record, died Sept. 14. He was 83.
With his wife, Laura Stone "Stoney" Johnston, who died in 1985, he bred horses at their farm on Johnston Road in Fayette County, Ky., a property that had been in his family since the 1800s.
The Johnstons were the breeders of several stakes winners including Ice Cool (champion 2-year-old in Italy), Instead Of Roses, I Found Gold, Gimli, and Maronee.
In September of 1977, the couple sold 175 acres of the farm, retaining the house and 10 acres.
Johnston attended the University of Kentucky and University of Virginia and served in the American Field Service during World War II. He later joined the U.S. Army.
