Emerald Downs' Champ Handy N Bold Retires

Handy N Bold, a 10-time stakes winner at Emerald Downs, was officially retired on Sunday.

The 8-year-old gelding is the only horse to win 10 career stakes races at Emerald Downs. His tenth and final stakes victory occurred on Aug. 3 in the Governor's Handicap. It marked the fourth time the Charles Essex-trained Handy N Bold had won the six-furlong stakes race, which dates back to 1933. No other horse won the Governor's more than twice.

Handy N Bold, a British Columbia-bred son of Bold Laddie, out of Five Rings, was claimed out of his first career start in 1997 for $25,000 by owner Doris Orr. The gelding would go on to post lifetime earnings of $349,122.

In addition to winning 10 local stakes races, Handy N Bold ranks second among all-time Emerald Downs money earners with $319,123, second only to Kid Katabatic ($332,100).

Handy N Bold finished his career with a record of 11-3-0 from 32 starts. He was named champion sprinter at Emerald Downs in 2000 and 2001 and top older horse at Emerald Downs in 2001.
