Keeneland Numbers Strong at Midway Point
Keeneland's September Yearling Sale reached the halfway point Sunday with substantial increases in gross sales, average and median.Through six days of the 12-day auction, Keeneland has sold 1,405 horses for $235,465,500, an average of $167,591 and a median of $85,000. The average and median are up 34.8% and 21.4%, respectively, from 2002.At the halfway point of the auction a year ago, gross sales totaled $178,272,700 for 1,434 horses. The average was $124,318 after six sessions and the median was $70,000.California-based trainer Bruce Headley, as agent, paid the top price of Sunday's session, $400,000, for a bay colt by Brazilian-bred Siphon out of Classical Dance, by Regal Classic. Headley said he bought the colt for Marsha Naify.Brereton C. Jones' Airdrie Stud, as agent, of Midway, Ky. consigned the colt. From three crops of racing age, Siphon has sired more than 50 winners including grade I stakes winner Siphonic.During Sunday's session, Keeneland sold 275 horses for $16,547,500. The average was $60,173 and the median was $45,000. At the comparable session in 2002, gross sales totaled $13,135,200 for 279 horses.
