Sue's Good News Tries Turf in Pucker Up
CresRan LLC's Sue's Good News tries the turf course for the first time in her brief career and will face 11 rivals, including two European invaders, in Saturday's $175,000 Pucker Up Stakes (gr. IIIT) for 3-year-old fillies at Arlington Park. The Pucker Up will be run at 1 1/8 mile over Arlington's turf course. A daughter of Woodman, Sue's Good News has won five of her six starts with the only blemish on her record coming in the $500,000 Delaware Oaks (gr. III) July 19. Trainer Steve Hobby indicated that Sue's Good News tied up sometime between leaving the paddock and arriving at the starting gate for the Delaware race, which likely accounted for her sluggish performance. She rebounded from that effort to capture the $100,000 Singapore Plate (gr. III) over the Arlingtn main track in her next trip to the post. Tim Doocy, who has been aboard Sue's Good News for all of her races, makes the trip in from Louisiana for Saturday's headliner. Among those slated to face Sue's Good News, who carries high weight of 122 pounds, are recent European arrivals Plume Rouge and Hoh Buzzard, as well as Sarie Marais, who has made only one start in this country after having previously run in France.
Skymarc Farms' Plume Rouge invades off a winning effort in the listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fairy Bridge Stakes at Tipperary, where the daughter of Pivotal scored by two lengths at odds of 10-1. The runner-up in that race, Perfect Touch, has since run second in a group III race. Earlier this year, Plume Rouge ran a good fifth in the Irish One Thousand Guineas (Ire-I) at The Curragh. She will race for trainer Kevin Prendergast on Saturday but will then be transferred to the American barn of Christophe Clement. Her regular rider, Ireland-based Declan McDonogh, will be in the irons. Gary Tanaka's Hoh Buzzard was second in her previous start, the Prix de la Nonette (Fr-III) over 1 1/4 mile at Deauville. Prior to that, the daughter of Alhaarth won three straight races at distances from a mile to 10 furlongs topped by the 1 1/4-mile listed European Breeders Fund Upavon Fillies' Stakes at Salisbury. Gary Stevens, making his first trip to Arlington since being injured at the finish of the Arlington Million (gr. IT) four weeks ago, comes in from California to guide Hoh Buzzard. John A. Chandler's Sarie Marais looks for her first victory in the United States after finishing second in her North American debut, the $50,000 Twin Lights Stakes at Monmouth Park, last month. Jose Velez Jr. has the call aboard the Michael Dickinson-trained daughter of Unbridled. $175,000 Pucker Up Stakes (gr. IIIT), 3-year-old fillies, 1 1/8 mile
