Retired Trainer Charles V. Reynolds Dead

Charles V. Reynolds, who trained for several celebrities on the New York circuit in the 1950s and '60s, died Sept. 4 at his home in Miami Lakes, Fla. He was 89.

Reynolds began his career as a jockey, and one of his roommates at the time was future Hall of Fame trainer Woody Stephens. When he grew too big to ride, Reynolds turned to training. His client list included the late legendary New Orleans bandleader, Louie Prima, and his wife, singer Keely Smith. Reynolds also trained for actress Ava Gabor.

Reynolds' main client was Sidney M. Barton, for whom he claimed Greek Star. Greek Star counted among his victories the inaugural running of the Sheepshead Bay Handicap at old Jamaica Race Track in 1959. Reynolds trained four other stakes winners during his career.

"He was a real nice guy," said Hall of Fame trainer Allen Jerkens. "He used to saddle horses for my father and I when I was too young to have a license."

Reynolds, whose nephew, Patrick Reynolds, is a trainer, is survived by his wife, Julie, a son, Charles Jr., and a daughter, Michaeline.
