Eleven horses are expected for Sunday's $1 million Atto Mile (Can-IT) at Woodbine, but the filly First Quarter will not be among them. Still expected are Perfect Soul and Freefourinternet, who had their last works before the race.First Quarter Out Of Atto, Tries Canadian Instead
Trainer Jim Day decided Wednesday morning that Come By Chance Stable's 2002 Carotene Stakes winning filly, First Quarter, will not run in Sunday's Atto Mile, but rather the race's filly and mare companion, the $250,000 Canadian Stakes, earlier in the card.
"My heart says she could handle the (Atto) Mile, but business-wise the Canadian makes more sense," said Day, when asked about the decision.
First Quarter might prefer the 1 1/8-mile distance of the Canadian, having won the Carotene and finishing second, beaten a nose by Madeira Mist in the 2003 Dance Smartly, at the distance.
Pat Day, at Woodbine to ride Moonshine Hall in the Atto, will ride First Quarter in the Canadian.Perfect Soul Drills An Easy Half-Mile
Charles Fipke's homebred Perfect Soul had his final tune-up for Sunday's $1 million Atto Mile (Can-IT) Wednesday morning, a four furlong breeze over the E.P. Taylor Turf Course in 48 3/5 seconds.
"We decided to go to the main (turf course) because we felt the turf would be a little bit better than the training track right now," said Rachel Halden, assistant trainer for Roger Attfield, who is currently in Kentucky.
"We just wanted a nice half into him and that's what he did. He really worked to our satisfaction. I was happy, the exerciser rider (Paul O'Sullivan) was happy and I just spoke to Roger and he sounded happy. So everything's a go."
Perfect Soul, a five-year-old son of Sadler's Wells, earlier this year won the King Edward Breeders' Cup Handicap at Woodbine. He comes into the Atto off a fifth-place finish, just three-quarters of a length behind the disqualified winner, Storming Home, in the Grade 1 Arlington Million, August 16.
The Atto will be his first career attempt at the one mile distance. Jockey Jose Santos, the regular pilot of this year's Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Funny Cide, will be aboard Perfect Soul for the first time.Freefourinternet Works Four Furlongs In Kentucky
Equirace Stable's Freefourinternet had his final blowout for Sunday's Atto Mile Wednesday morning at the Highpointe Farm and Training Center in Kentucky.
"He worked super. He worked in company, then pulled away from another horse," said trainer Joan Scott. "This track is nice and deep and safe. He went in about 48 2/5 (seconds)."
Freefourinternet will ship up to Woodbine later today for arrival Thursday morning.
Jockey Robby Albarado has been secured to handle the 5-year-old son of Tabasco Cat. In his last start, the July 5 Firecracker Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IIT) at Churchill Downs, Freefourinternet closed with a rush to finish second to another Atto rival, Tap the Admiral.
