Kentucky Broodmare of the Year Northern Sunset, the dam of four major stakes winners, was euthanized today after suffering a stroke. The 26-year-old mare was owned by Payson Stud owner Virginia Kraft Payson.
Northern Sunset was named Broodmare of the Year in 1995. She is the dam of European Horse of the Year St. Jovite, a son of Pleasant Colony who stands at Payson Stud. She also produced multiple grade II winners and millionaires L'Carriere (by Carr de Naskra), Salem Drive (by Darby Creek Road), and Lac Ouimet (by Pleasant Colony).
She is the fourth dam of 2002 Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) winner Farda Amiga.
Northern Sunset, by Northfields out of the Ballymoss mare Moss Greine, was bred in Ireland by Basil Brindley. She was purchased by Payson for $105,000 carrying her first foal (Salem Drive).
Northern Sunset raced at two and three on the flat in Ireland, and at four won over hurdles.
St. Jovite was champion juvenile colt in Ireland in 1991 and at three was champion colt in Ireland and France and named European Horse of the Year. He won the Irish Derby (Ire-I) and defeated older horses in the King George and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes (Eng-I).
