Godolphin's Moon Ballad, who scored a brilliant victory in the Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) earlier in the year, is heading to Belmont Park for the Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I) on Sept. 27.
The 4-year-old son of Singspiel is expected to take on Woodward (gr. I) winner Mineshaft and Belmont (gr. I) winner Empire Maker in what promises to be an exciting prelude to the Breeders' Cup Classic – Powered by Dodge (gr. I).
Moon Ballad is coming off a solid fifth-place finish in the Irish Champion Stakes (Ire-I) last weekend, in which he was beaten only a couple of lengths by High Chaparral and Falbrav.
"The plan is that we are going to send him to the United States for the Jockey Club Gold Cup which will be his big prep for the Breeders' Cup Classic," said Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford.
"Moon Ballad has had a slightly frustrating campaign in Europe, but were pleased with the way he ran in Ireland on Saturday. He has come out of that race really well and we're happy with the progress that he has made recently. We know he handles dirt well."
In the Dubai World Cup, Moon Ballad defeated America's Harlan's Holiday by five lengths. Prior to that he was second, beaten a half-length by Storming Home in the Champion Stakes (Eng-I) at Newmarket.
Godolphin will have a powerful one-two puch on Gold Cup day, as they send out Sulamani in the Turf Classic (gr. IT)
