Joseph Shields Jr.'s House Party won the $200,000 Endine Handicap (gr. III) in dramatic fashion at Delaware Park Saturday.
The daughter of French Deputy ridden by this year's Kentucky Derby-winning jockey Jose Santos, equaled the 23-year-old track record for six furlongs of 1:08 1/5 over a fast main track. Damitrius set the six-furlong record in 1980.
Taking on older fillies and mares for the first time, House Party won by a length. Vision in Flight with Gary Boulanger aboard ran second. It was another 4 1/2 lengths farther back to Mooji Moo, with Abdiel Toribio aboard in third.
House Party, in mid-pack early, closed off of early fractions of :21.99 for the quarter mile and :44.46 for the half mile. The Florida bred trained by H. Allen Jerkens raised her career record to six wins from 13 starts with earnings of $585,000.
Santos has been impressed with the maturity of House Party.
"She settles so nice now," he said. "Before she used to be a little rank or she would stay too far back, but now she is staying in a better position. When I called on her the last quarter mile she came to the outside and she just rolled. The last quarter mile, I basically let her do what she wanted to do because she was going so easily.
"If I had known she was going to equal the track record, I would have probably pushed her a little bit and she probably would have done it. It is amazing she tied a 23-year-old track record."
Lilah, Bronze Abe, Mandy's Gold, Forest Heiress, Vicki Vallencourt and Margarita's Garden all scratched.
Wilzada, the 2-1 second choice among the eight remaining runners, finished last after breaking in a tangle, showing early speed and fading.
House Party paid $3.60, $2.80 and $2.10. Vision in Flight returned $5 and $3.60. Mooji Moo paid $3.
Country Be Gold, favored at 9-5 in the field of ten, won the Owners' Day Handicap at Delaware earlier on the card. Ridden by Santos, the 6-year-old son of Summer Squall won by 1 3/4 lengths. Judge's Case, ridden by Ramon Dominguez, finished second and it was another 2 1/2 lengths farther back to Invent, with Mario Pino aboard, in third.
Country Be Gold covered the 1 1/16 mile in 1:49.40 over a fast main track and returned $5.80. The Kentucky-bred owned by the S A Partnership and trained by Reynaldo Nobles increased his career record to seven wins from 36 starts with earnings of $540,000.
Skymarc Farm's Madeira Mist won the George Rosenberger Memorial at Delaware Park today. Ridden by Ramon Dominguez, the 4-year-old daughter of Grand Lodge won by 1 3/4 lengths. Media Access, ridden by Jeremy Rose, finished second and it was another 2 1/2- engths farther back to Katzen, with Oliver Castillo aboard, in third. Madeira Mist covered the 1 1/16 mile in 1:43.80 over a firm turf course and returned $3.80 as the favorite in the field of nine. The Irish bred trained by Christophe Clement increased her career record to five wins from 12 starts with earnings of $250,000.
