Ballena Vista Farm has pensioned millionaire Fighting Fit from stallion duty. The decision was made after the 24-year-old son of Full Pocket showed signs of acute joint arthritis during the 2003 breeding season.

"Although he still impregnated mares this year, we feel it's our duty to give him the best life possible," said director of operations Janine McCullough. "We have been milling over his retirement since the painful signs started in both hind ankles this year."

Fighting Fit, who was produced from the Nilo mare Napalm, sired 13 stakes winners, including graded winners Fighting Fantasy and Lady Sonata. His runners have earned $10.4 million. As a racehorse, Fighting Fit won three graded stakes, and his nine stakes-placings included a third-place effort in the inaugural Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I).

Fighting Fit will live out his days at Ballena Vista near Ramona, Calif., where he has resided since 1995.
