Leatherbury to be Honored at Pimlico
The Maryland Jockey Club will honor King Leatherbury, who last month became the third trainer in history to win 6,000 races, with a "Toast And Roast" Saturday at Pimlico. "They are keeping most of what is happening from me," said Leatherbury, who joined Dale Baird and Jack Van Berg in the 6,000 win club when Cherokee Sunrise won at Timonium on Aug. 23. "This will be a little embarrassing but at the same time I am very proud. It really has been a big deal and I'm getting letters in the mail. Yesterday I got one from Dr. Alex Harthill in Kentucky."Fans will receive a complimentary 6,000-win button, while WMAR-TV sportscaster Keith Mills will interview friends and colleagues of the King between races. Expected to participate are former stable riders Bill Passmore, Donnie Miller and Mark Johnston, and Bill Boniface, who trained Deputed Testamony to a victory in the 1983 Preakness. The MJC will present Leatherbury with gifts and a video tribute. The non-stakes races of the day will be named after some of Leatherbury's top horses.
