One day before leaving for the Southern California circuit, Ryan Fogelsonger won with his only mount on Wednesday's opening day of the Pimlico summer-fall meet, guiding Late Night Leader ($5) to a popular score in the sixth race for trainer Dale Capuano.
"It was great to win another race at Pimlico before I left," said Fogelsonger, who leaves Maryland with 496 wins to his credit. "Dale asked me on Sunday if I'd ride and of course I said yes because Dale's been great to me."
Capuano was prominent in Fogelsonger's meteoric rise as a bug rider in 2002 as the young jockey earned the Eclipse Award for outstanding apprentice.
"All my stuff was packed away," added Fogelsonger, who will ride at Del Mar on Friday. "I had to borrow everything but it was worth it."
Magic Weisner, the 2002 Preakness Stakes (gr. I) runner-up, continues his battle back from West Nile virus, breezing five furlongs Wednesday morning at Laurel Park in 1:05. It is the second workout for the Nancy Alberts owned and trained 4-year old since his July 24 comeback race.
