Extremely cold temperatures combined with high winds to put a halt to the live racing card at Aqueduct Jan. 9 after four of nine races had been run. When the decision was made to cancel the card shortly before 2:30 p.m. EST, the temperature in Queens, N.Y., was 16 degrees with wind chills near zero.
New York rules require four out of the six legs of the pick six to be run before a carryover pool is in effect. Since only one leg in the sequence was run, the almost $100,000 carryover will be funneled into the Jan. 10 pool. All pick six tickets containing the winner the fourth race Jan. 9 were paid out as winning tickets.
Racing at Aqueduct is scheduled to resume Jan. 10, with the feature race the Affectionately Handicap (gr. III) for fillies and mares. Temperatures are not expected to reach the 20s.
