Diamond Fury, at $2.7 million the most expensive 2-year-old in training ever purchased at public auction, was third in his debut at Del Mar Saturday, a 5½-furlong maiden special weight event.
The Charles Fipke-owned ridgeling by Sea of Secrets, ridden by Mike Smith for trainer Bob Baffert, pressured the leaders while wide on the turn, led briefly at the top of the lane but weakened through the stretch. He finished 8 1/2 lengths behind the winner Consecrate, also trained by Baffert and ridden by David Flores for owner James McIngvale.
Out of the Tasso mare Swift Spirits, Diamond Fury was purchased at the Barretts Equine Ltd. March sale of select 2-year-olds in training from the consignment of Sequel Bloodstock, agent.
The chestnut was sent off at 8-5, the second choice behind 11-10 Courageous King, a son of Elusive Quality who was fourth in the field of six.
