Einar P. Robsham's Feline Story turned on the afterburners in the stretch and drew off to win Saturday's $100,000 Sorority Stakes (gr. III) by nearly six lengths at Monmouth Park.
The 2-year-old daughter of Tale of the Cat, trained by Stan Hough, raced six furlongs in 1:10 4/5 over a wet-fast track and paid $4.80, $4.40 and $3 across the board as the favorite in the field of eight. Whirlwind Charlott rallied to take the place by a 1 1/4 length over Stand on Top to complete the $67.60 exacta.
The Sorority score gave jockey Jose Ferrer a sweep of the 2-year-old graded stakes at Monmouth Park this year. Ferrer rode Dashboard Drummer to victory in the Sapling Stakes (gr. III) on Aug. 9. He was the first jockey to complete the double since 1974, when Jacinto Vasquez rode Foolish Pleasure to win the Sapling and guided Ruffian to victory in the Sorority.
"The boss (Hough) told me she didn't have to be on the lead," Ferrer said of the race, "that she could sit just off of it. At the half-mile pole I saw a couple of horses moving on my outside and I just went on with it. Once I asked her, she took off, game over."
Feline Story broke her maiden at Belmont in June, and then won the Astoria Stakes there. Last out, she was fourth in the Schuylerville (gr. II). Her sire, Tale of the Cat, broke his maiden at Monmouth.
Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Toffel's Only the Best staged a furious rally through the stretch and was up by a nose to win the $50,000 Select Stakes earlier on the card, giving jockey Carlos Cruz his fourth winner of the day.
Only the Best, trained by Bryan Lynch, hit the wire in :55 4/5 for the five furlongs on firm turf, just inches in front of Special Judge. Second in Command was a distant third.
Only the Best, who won Monmouth's Anderson Fowler Stakes in July, paid $6.80, $3.80 and $3.20 across the board and topped a $30.60 exacta.
Cruz also won the third race aboard Pirate Ship ($7.80), the fourth on Castle Comer ($5.60), and the seventh on Monet ($5.80).
