Graded stakes winner Sea of Showers was retired because of a throat problem following her last-place effort in the Aug. 23 Ballston Spa Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Saratoga. Owned by the Niarchos family's Flaxman Stable, she arrived Aug. 26 at Lane's End Farm/Oak Tree Division near Lexington. Breeding plans have not been decided.
A homebred daughter of Seattle Slew, 4-year-old Sea of Showers won four of nine starts and earned $161,449. She captured the Jenny Wiley Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Keeneland in the spring and was group II placed in France last year. Bobby Frankel trained her in the U.S. Sea of Showers, whose dam, Chimes of Freedom (by Private Account), was a European champion, is a half-sister to grade I winners Aldebaran and Good Journey.
