Jockey Club Gold Cup Highlights Belmont Fall Meet

The 38-day fall meet at Belmont Park will offer a $10.5 million stakes schedule featuring 14 grade I races, including the $1-million Jockey Club Gold Cup on Saturday, September 27.

Belmont Park's fall meet will run from Friday, September 5 though Sunday, October 26. Post time is 1 p.m., daily, Wednesday, through Sunday, except October 26, when post time will be 12:30 p.m. General admission remains $2 and clubhouse admission is $5, while children 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.

Grade I racing gets off to an early start, with three such races on Saturday, September 6: the $500,000, weight-for-age Woodward at nine furlongs; the $500,000 weight-for-age Man o'War at 11 furlongs on the turf; and the $250,000 Gazelle for three-year-old fillies at nine furlongs.

The 10-furlong Jockey Club Gold Cup, a major prep for the Breeders Cup Classic, heads up Breeders' Cup Preview Day at Belmont Park on Saturday, September 27, the richest day of the meet. That day's program will also include the grade I, $750,000 Turf Classic at a mile and a half on the grass; the grade I Flower Bowl Invitational for fillies and mares at 10 furlongs on the turf; and the grade I, $500,000 Vosburgh, whose distance was changed from seven furlongs to 6 1/2 furlongs and its purse boosted by $200,000.

On Saturday, October 4, juvenile horses will be featured in the grade I, $500,000 Champagne for 2-year-olds and its filly counterpart, the Frizette, each at 1 1/16 miles. The day's highlight, however, will be the grade I, $750,000 Beldame for fillies and mares at nine furlongs.

Rounding out the grade I schedule are the $250,000 Garden City Breeders' Cup handicap for three-year-old fillies at nine furlongs on the turf on Sunday, September 7; the $300,000 Ruffian Handicap for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles on Saturday, September 13; and the Futurity for 2-year-olds and the Matron for 2-year-old fillies, each at a mile and each worth $200,000, on Sunday, September 14.

On Saturday, October 18, Belmont Park will again host the New York Showcase Day. The salute to the New York Thoroughbred Breeding & Racing Program, features seven races, each worth at least $100,000 and headlined by the $250,000 Empire Classic at nine furlongs.
