On April 21, sports fans in Lexington, Ky. can enjoy two of the city's best professional sports and in turn support the United Way of the Bluegrass.
The Lexington Legends and Keeneland are teaming up to offer the first-ever "Daily Double Header," which begins with a Legends' baseball game in the morning and ends with an afternoon of racing at Keeneland.
Keeneland is donating all of its general admission proceeds on that day to the United Way of the Bluegrass. Fans attending the Legends' game in the morning may present their Legends' "Daily Double Header" voucher for free admission at Keeneland that afternoon. To ensure that the United Way receives the full potential of the gate receipts, Keeneland is making an additional donation to the United Way to cover the general admission fees waived for the baseball fans.
The Legends moved the first pitch of its game against the Asheville Tourists to 10:30 a.m. Eastern so as not to conflict with Keeneland's afternoon of racing. Keeneland's first post is 1:15 p.m. with the featured race of the day-the $100,000 Bewitch Stakes (gr. III), scheduled to run at approximately 4:45 p.m. Keeneland bugler
Bucky Sallee will play before the start of the baseball game. Alan Stein, president and chief executive officer of the Legends, and Keeneland president Nick Nicholson will present a trophy.
"This is a sports fan's dream day," said Stein. "For just $3, they can get a full day of baseball and racing. The fact that it benefits the United Way is a huge added bonus."
Stein co-chaired the United Way annual campaign in 2003. Keeneland and the Legends are hoping this will become a template for future events.
"This is truly a collaborative effort between the Legends and Keeneland, " said Nicholson. "It is a wonderful way to give back to our fans and help a very worthwhile organization."
