Top Broodmare Too Chic Dies at Age 24
Grade I winner and foundation broodmare Too Chic was euthanized Wednesday at Helen Alexander's Middlebrook Farm near Lexington, Ky. due to the infirmities of old age. The 24-year-old daughter of Blushing Groom spent some of her broodmare career at King Ranch.Bred by King Ranch, Too Chic was purchased as a yearling by Emory Alexander Hamilton at the 1980 Fasig-Tipton July yearling sale. Racing for Hamilton, she captured the Maskette (gr. I), placed in the Alabama (gr. I) and Wistful S., and equaled a track record at Belmont, in eight starts. The first foal produced from Too Chic was Chic Shirine, winner of the 1987 Ashland Stakes (gr. I), and her second foal was champion Queena, winner of the Maskette (gr. I), Ruffian (gr. I), and Ballerina (gr. I). Queena went on to produce grade I winner and young sire Brahms, whose first foals arrived this year, and Chic Shirine produced grade II winners Waldoboro and Tara Roma. Too Chic also is the granddam of 2001 Go For Wand (gr. I) winner Serra Lake and multiple stakes winner Cappuchino. Many of Too Chic's descendants were bred and raced by Hamilton.Too Chic will be buried at Middlebrook next to 1983 Broodmare of the Year Courtly Dee.
