Charlie Whittingham, who stood as a giant in Thoroughbred racing as a Hall of Fame trainer for decades, will be remembered as a war veteran Friday when a plaque is dedicated in his memory by the Mount Soledad Veterans Memorial Association.
The plaque will be placed among those honoring other area men and women who served in the armed forces in time of war. The plaques are on walls below the giant cross that stands on Mount Soledad.
Whittingham was born in Chula Vista and served in the United State Marine Corps during World War II. He died four years ago.
The ceremony will be held at noon on Friday. The public is welcome.
