The racing community in and around Churchill Downs received a jolt on Preakness morning with word of the death of trainer and owner Danny Hutt on Friday evening. Hutt, 51, died suddenly while eating with friends at a Louisville restaurant.
The Louisville native launched his career as an owner and trainer in the Standardbred ranks and eventually moved over to Thoroughbreds. He saddled one horse in the Kentucky Derby. Celtic Warrior, a colt he owned in partnership with William Schaffrick and Robert Quackenbush, finished 10th behind Silver Charm in 1997.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. (all times EDT) at Second Presbyterian Church, 3701 Brownsboro Road in Louisville. Burial will be in Cave Hill Cemetery.
