Maryland jockey Rick Wilson was discharged May 25 from the Maryland Shock Trauma Center and sent for rehabilitation to Kernan Hospital near Baltimore.
Wilson, 50, was injured May 8 when his mount at Pimlico stumbled out of the starting gate, threw him head over heels onto the ground and then stepped on his head.
"He's coming along pretty quickly," said John Salzman Jr., his agent. "He's trying to speak, but his throat is still too sore from all the tubes. Everything's working -- his arms, his hands, his legs. He's been up and walking."
Wilson was initially listed in critical condition after being transported from Pimlico in a State Police MedEvac helicopter.
He ranks 20th among jockeys in wins with 4,939.
