Favored Yougottawanna, allowed to establish an easy lead, held off stablemate Gold Ruckus by three-quarters of a length to win the $86,250 Seabiscuit Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. III) at Bay Meadows.
Ridden by Russell Baze for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and owner Peter Redekop B.C., Ltd., Yougottawanna completed the 1 1/8-mile Seabiscuit in 1:40 at odds of 13-10.
Taken in hand early, the 5-year-old California-bred Candi's Gold gelding got the early lead over defending Seabiscuit champion Reba's Gold while carving fractions of :23 1/5, :46 and 1:09 2/5. Gold Ruckus, a separate betting interest in spite of the same ownership connections, tracked the pace for Chad Schvaneveldt on the rail and found room along the inside before shifting out in the stretch to challenge willingly. Snorter, the 9-5 second choice for trainer Bobby Frankel in the field of five, was allowed to settle by jockey Danny Carr into the final turn, attempted to rally while four wide, but flattened out in mid-stretch, finishing 3 3/4 lengths behind the winner.
Reba's Gold, making his first start since Oct. 3, weakened late to finish fourth. Calkins Road was last.
Yougottawanna picked up his first graded stakes victory since winning the El Camino Real Derby (gr. III) at Golden Gate Fields in March of 2002. Hollendorfer, who saddled Yougottawanna to the El Camino win and lost him for $50,000 Feb. 28, claimed the gelding back for $80,000 from trainer John Martin in his last start, a 1 1/16-mile victory by six lengths April 22 at Bay Meadows. Monday's win, Yougottawanna's seventh in 25 career starts, was worth $41,250, which increased his career earnings to $472,054.
The winner paid $4.60, $3.20 and $2.0. Gold Ruckus returned $5.20 and $3. Snorter was $2.60 to show. The exacta was worth $20.20.
