Peter H. Shannon Jr., a prominent Thoroughbred owner in New Jersey , died Aug. 16 after a long illness.

Shannon entered the Thoroughbred industry over 25 years ago and was the dominant owner in the Garden State State in the early 1980s. From 1980-1985, he started more horses and won more races than any other owner in New Jersey history.

His Sovereign Song won the 1987 Oceanport Handicap at Monmouth and the 1988 Manila Stakes at the Meadowlands. In 1995, his Quaker Bonnet captured the Lady's Secret and Personal Ensign Stakes, both at Monmouth. In 2000, he was honored by Monmouth Park with the Virgil "Buddy" Raines Distinguished Achievement Award, which honors horsemen who have demonstrated a continuing commitment to the sport of Thoroughbred racing as an owner or trainer, and whose conduct has been exemplary for professionalism, integrity and service to the sport.

A resident of Avon-by-the-Sea, Shannon was CEO and CFO of Linde-Griffith Construction Company of Newark, N.J. While working there for 36 years, he changed the pile driving industry with his brilliant creativity and innovative thinking. He was also an accomplished C.P.A. and Navy veteran.

Shannon is survived by his wife of 37 years, Susan, and their three children and nine grandchildren.

Respects may be paid Tuesday, August 19 from 9:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the Ascension Church on Brinley Avenue in Bradley Beach, NJ. A Catholic Mass will follow at 11:00 with interment at St. Anne's Cemetery in Wall.
