Mubtaker Brilliant in Geoffrey Freer Repeat
Hamdan Al Maktoum's Mubtaker, a brilliant 3 1/2-length victor in Saturday's Geoffrey Freer Stakes (Eng-II) at Newbury for the second straight year, may be headed for Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Fr-I).The 6-year-old American bred son of Silver Hawk was so much better than his competition in the mile and five-furlong Freer Saturday that his trainer, Marcus Tregoning acknowledged that he may change plans for Mubtaker, who was being pointed to the Melbourne Cup."I wouldn't rule out Melbourne completely but I'm afraid he'll probably get too much weight," Tregoning told The Racing Post.. "I actually wouldn't mind dropping back to a mile and a half. I wouldn't rule out the Arc and he'll be entered in all the big races although I'm not sure he wants it too soft." Ridden by Richard Hills, the 4-6 favorite Mubtaker, third in the field of five most of the way, collared front-running Systematic inside of three furlongs from home and coasted home. Warren W. Rosenthal bred the winner.
