New Zealand Champion Jockey Retires

Champion Kiwi jockey Lance O'Sullivan stunned New Zealand racing yesterday with his retirement from the saddle.
The 39 year-old O'Sullivan has ridden more than 2,470 winners, including 62 group I races. In the just completed New Zealand season he was named champion rider for a record 12th time.
His major wins outside New Zealand included the 1989 Japan Cup on the champion distaffer Horlicks, trained by his father, Dave. He won a W.S. Cox Plate on North American flop Surfers Paradise.
Many of his winners over the past 20 years were trained by his father and after his retirement, Lance's brother Paul.
He is believed to be considering taking up employment with New Zealand's off-track TAB.
