A field of 11 juvenile fillies, including recent Colleen Stakes winner Im a Dixie Girl, will compete Saturday at River Downs in the six-furlong, $100,000 Pepsi Bassinet Stakes.
On Labor Day, the boys get their chance in the track's signature event, the Cradle Stakes (gr. III).
Im a Dixie Girl, one of three runners in the field trained by Bernie Flint, was an easy winner of the Colleen, costing home eight lengths on top. Prior to that, she ran fourth in the grade II Debutante Stakes at Churchill Downs. The Bill Carl homebred daughter of Dixie Union
, was installed the 2-1 second choice and will break from the five post under Willie Martinez.
Flint will also send out Angel Trumpet, the slight 8-5 favorite based on her record. After breaking her maiden in her first start at Churchill Downs, the Cape Canaveral
filly finished second in the Schulyerville (gr. II) at Saratoga and second in the Anna Fisher Debutante at Ellis Park. She races for her breeder, Dreabon Copeland. Calvin Borel has the mount.
Flint's third entrant is Runway Model, who will break from the outside post with jockey Jeff Johnston. The Petionville filly races for Naveed Chowhan. She has won two of five starts including her last outing, an allowance race at River.
Gallant Secret is coming off a layoff but bears watching for trainer James Jackson. She won her first start at Keeneland before running second in the Three Chimneys Juvenile Stakes at Churchill on Kentucky Derby day. Mark Guidry rides the Menifee
filly owned by her breeder, Elkhorn Oaks Racing.
