Perfect Soul, who has lived up to part of his name at Keeneland, will try to extend his perfect mark at the Lexington track as he takes on eight rivals in Saturday's Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes (gr. IT) under jockey Edgar Prado. A 6-year-old, Perfect Soul won last's year's running of the $600,000 guaranteed race. Open to 3-year-olds and up, this year's running attracted all older horses, thus the 126-pound impost for all.
Perfect Soul started this year with a victory in the Maker's Mark Mile Stakes (gr. IIT) at Keeneland in the spring, but hasn't won since in four starts. His closing style left him a little short of victory in the Sept. 19 Atto Mile Stakes (Can-IT) in a runner-up effort in his last outing.
Two of the Shadwell Turf contestants, Nothing to Lose and Silver Tree, finished one-two, only a half-length apart, in the Aug. 28 Fourstardave Handicap (gr. IIT) at Saratoga over 1 1/16 miles. Ay Caramba, fourth in the Fourstardave, will be making his third U.S. start in the Shadwell Turf. He was a group I winner in his native Brazil.
Warleigh will be gunning to make it two straight. Warleigh, who figures to be on or close to the lead, captured the Sept. 26 Harrah's Louisiana Downs Breeders' Cup Handicap.
The remainder of the field consists of Honor in War, third in the Sept. 18 John Henry on turf at Arlington; Puppeteer, a French group winner; Surging River, fourth in the Atto Mile; and Sweet Return, a two-time graded turf winner in the winter, but winless in four outings since then.
