Chateaucreek, Dam of Derby Winner Henbit, Dead at 33

Chateaucreek, dam of 1980 Epsom Derby (Eng-I) winner Henbit, was euthanized Aug. 7 at Mrs. Jack G. Jones Sr.'s Mineola Farm near Lexington. The daughter of 1963 Kentucky Derby winner Chateaugay was 33. Henbit, who was England's champion 3-year-old male, was one of seven winners from the 11 named foals from Chateaucreek.
Bred by Warner L. Jones Jr.'s Hermitage Farm and a stakes winner on the racetrack, Chateaucreek was acquired following her racing career by Mr. and Mrs. Jones in a trade for a Swoon's Son yearling. Swoon's Son was a major homebred winner for Mrs. Jones' father, E. Gay Drake. Chateaucreek is the granddam of grade I winners Mr Purple and Queens Court Queen. plus course-record-setting graded stakes winner Fantastic Fellow.
Chateaucreek, who was produced from the Sailor mare Mooncreek, was buried near Swoon's Son at Mineola.
