Jockey Todd Kabel can match a 38-year-old Woodbine record for stakes wins in a season when he partners with 126-pound high weight Mobil in the $150,000-added Durham Cup Stakes (Can-III) Saturday.
Kabel, who is enjoying one of the finest seasons ever by a jockey in Ontario, needs only one stakes win to equal the mark, set by the late great Avelino Gomez, of 32 added-money victories in one season.
Mobil spots his four opponents in the 1 1/8-mile Durham Cup from 10 to 18 pounds as the heavy choice.
Mobil was most recently fifth in the Atto Mile (Can-I) Sept. 19 after stalking the pace and evening out in the stretch. The Mike Keogh-trained 4-year-old son of Langfuhr
has earned about $1.5 million in his career.
Kabel, 38, has mounts in both stakes races offered at the Toronto oval this weekend. He also pilots Go to the Sun for trainer Mark Frostad in the $250,000 Cup & Saucer Stakes on Sunday.
With a sweep of the stakes, Kabel would own the title having won all his races at Woodbine. Gomez earned the mark during an era where three tracks hosted an "A" meet in the province – Woodbine, Fort Erie and Greenwood. Seventy-two stakes were offered during the 1966 season.
Kabel has 31 wins in 72 stakes mounts so far this year.$150,000-added Durham Cup Stakes (Can-III), 3 & up, 1 1/8 miles
