Larry Ryan, breeder of 1984 Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) winner Royal Heroine and a former chairman of the Irish National Stud, has died, according to an article by Michael Clower that appeared in the Racing Post.

Irish-bred Royal Heroine captured the inaugural Mile as part of the favored entry from the outside No. 10 post. Her other stakes efforts that year included a triumph in the Matriarch Stakes (gr. IT) and a second in the Budweiser Million (gr. I). The millionaire mare was voted an Eclipse Award as top turf female.
