Undefeated Three Valleys Heads Middle Park Entries

Edited from a release

Unbeaten Three Valleys heads the 76 entries for the £170,000 group I Shadwell Stud Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket on Friday, Oct. 3, 2003. The 2-year-old Diesis colt scored by eight lengths over Botanical in the group III Coventry Stakes at the Royal Meeting causing his trainer, Roger Charlton, to claim the colt is the best 2-year-old he's ever trained.

Last year this contest, which is the first group I event of the season in Britain for two-year-old colts, went to the John Gosden-trained Oasis Dream, who returned to Newmarket last month when scorching to victory in the group I Darley July Cup, beating Australian dual Royal Ascot winner Choisir by 1 1/2 lengths in a memorable encounter.

This year Gosden's two entries are Gold Mask, three lengths behind Oman Gulf in the Invesco Perpetual Maiden Stakes at Newmarket in July, and the unraced Free Trip, who like Oasis Dream is owned by Khalid Abdullah.

Russian Valour is a member of Mark Johnston's powerful juvenile squad and, despite being a huge horse, he has won three of his five starts including the group III Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, where he was 1 3/4 lengths too powerful for the highly-regarded Kheleyf.

Third-placed Nevisian Lad has subsequently won the group II TNT July Stakes at Newmarket for local trainer Michael Bell, while the fourth home, Old Deuteronomy, was the half-length runner-up to Carrizo Creek in the group II Four Star Sales Richmond Stakes at Goodwood last week.

Champion Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien has won two of the last three runnings of the Shadwell Stud Middle Park Stakes, courtesy of Minardi in 2000 and Johannesburg the following year. This season the master of Ballydoyle has the pick of 22 entries including Antonius Pius, unbeaten in two starts including the group II Anheuser Busch Railway Stakes at the Curragh in June with stable-companion Devil Moon back in sixth, One Cool Cat, who justified odds-on favoritism in the Dubai Duty Free Anglesey Stakes at the same venue the following month when proving 1 1/2 lengths too powerful for Leicester Square, and Grand Reward, well-backed on his only start when winning a maiden at Newbury in May.

The other powerhouse of international horseracing, Godolphin, has an intriguing pair of entries in Golden Sahara and Kaseh. Both are currently unraced, with the former being a son of Green Desert, who is also responsible for siring Oasis Dream.

The sole entry from outside Britain and Ireland is the Robert Collet-trained Whipper. He was beaten just over five lengths by Denebola in a group III contest at Deauville on Saturday, but must be respected if he lines up as Collet saddled Zipping to finish runner-up to Johannesburg in this event two years ago.

Holborn, trained by Mick Channon, was successful in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot, while the Richard Hannon-trained Venables won the Listed Shadwell Stud Rose Bowl Stakes at Newbury on July 18, accounting for America America by three-quarters of a length.

There is a supplementary entry stage, costing £12,000, on Saturday, Sept. 27.
