The most heard word on the backside of Lone Star Park this week has been humidity. The weather has been warm but the sticky humidity has made it seem much hotter.
Plenty of horses were lathered up on the racetrack Thursday morning, when the temperature was in the 70s and the humidity was approaching 80%.
The high on Thursday was expected to be 83 degrees, with 81 predicted as a high on Friday and 78 on Saturday, when the eight Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships will be contested. There is a 30% chance of thunderstorms in north Texas Saturday.
The hottest of the 20 prior Breeders' Cup days was last year when the event was held at Santa Anita in Southern California. The temperature for the first post was 99 degrees. The humidity was not recorded but it was considerably lower than in the Grand Prairie, Texas area this week.
