Former Calumet Official Margaret Glass Dead at 82

Margaret Glass, who worked at Calumet Farm during the glory days, died Aug. 2 at the University of Kentucky hospital. She was 82.

Glass, known as "Maggie" in the racing industry, filled the role of farm business and office manager as well as accountant, booking manager, pedigree consultant, historian, and goodwill ambassador, first for Warren Wright Sr., and his wife, Lucille, then later for a widowed Lucille and her husband, Adm. Gene Markey. Her love of the glorious Calumet tradition continued unabated even after she left in 1982 after 42 years. She often wore a jacket and pants that she made in the farm's devil's red and blue colors.

Glass, who came to Calumet the year before homebred Whirlaway won the 1941 Triple Crown, helped spearhead the effort to have the Calumet trophies preserved at the Kentucky Horse Park near Lexington. She was active in several Thoroughbred organizations and served as a trustee on the Lucille P. Markey Charitable Trust. She founded the Thorobreds, an organization for women.

Glass, who left Calumet in 1982, is survived by her husband, Frank; a son, George; a daughter Willow; a sister, Betty, and four grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Aug. 4 at Tates Creek Christian Church at 3 p.m.
