Officials at Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino announced today Jason Boulet has been hired as racing secretary for the 2005 racing season. Boulet, currently working as a racing official at Fair Grounds in New Orleans, will assume his duties immediately. A Lafayette, La., native, Boulet has held numerous positions on both the backside and the frontside during his 14-year career.
In 2002 he took on a full-time position with Fair Grounds as assistant director of racing/stakes coordinator. For a brief time earlier this year, he was named racing secretary at Fair Grounds, however, after the sale of the track to Churchill Downs, it was announced that previous racing secretary Ben Huffman would return in that role for the 2004-2005 season.
"It was a difficult decision," said Boulet of accepting the position. "The previous Fair Grounds management (Bryan and Vicki Krantz) were very good to me and were great people to work for. It has also been a pleasure working with the Churchill Downs people (general manager Randy Soth, Donnie Richardson, and current Fair Grounds racing secretary Ben Huffman) since their arrival. I am leaving on good terms. For me, it is an opportunity to go back home. I love this area and the job came up at the right place, at the right time."
David A. Yount, executive director of racing operations at Evangeline Downs Racetrack said: "When the racing secretary position became vacant, we wanted to focus our search on a candidate with local ties. Jason has those ties to racing here in Louisiana and that will benefit him as we move forward."
