Condition of Sarava Continues to Improve
Sarava, the 2002 Belmont Stakes winner who underwent emergency colic surgery last Sunday morning after making his first start in 14 months, could be released from the San Luis Rey Equine Hospital within a week, trainer Bob Baffert said on Friday."He's doing a lot better," Baffert said. "The word I'm getting is that if he continues to progress he'll leave San Luis Rey sometime next week." Baffert and principal owner Gary Drake said the son of Wild Again should be able to resume training eventually because the surgery, performed by Dr. Joe Cannon hours after Sarava finished sixth in an allowance race – his first since winning the Belmont – did not necessitate the removal of any intestines. Cannon cut into the colt to untangle a colon that had become twisted.
