Michael Gilligan, Santa Anita Park's vice president of marketing and sales, was relieved of duties a couple of days prior to the opening of the track's 70th anniversary season.
The decision came less than four months after Gilligan, a former theme park marketer, was hired.
Track president Jack McDaniel said Gilligan, who was Santa Anita's third marketing director in th past three years, would be available to be used in a consulting role, according to the Los Angeles Times
"Michael still has his consulting firm and wasn't going to be able to devote a sufficient amount of time to what's going on at Santa Anita," McDaniel told the newspaper.
McDaniel and Gilligan formerly worked together as marketing executives for Universal Studios Theme Park in Florida.
According to the newspaper, McDaniel told marketing department employees at Santa Anita that they would report directly to him.
