Team Block's Dyna Da Wyna headlines a solid field of 13, including five stakes/group winners, in Saturday's $100,000 Dr. A. B. Leggio Memorial Handicap at Fair Grounds. The turf dash for older fillies and mares will be run as the first of four $100,000 stakes on the day's card.
Dyna Da Wyna, the 122-pound highweight, owns four stakes victories on the turf, including 2004 stakes wins in the Clark County and Stravinsky Stakes, both at Keeneland. Both of those races were at 5 1/2 furlongs, the distance of the Leggio.
Conditioned by Elliott Walden, the 5-year-old daughter of Doc's Leader, claimed her richest win in the 2003 Valley View Stakes (gr. III) at Keeneland. Bred by Alan Klein in Kentucky, Dyna Da Wyna hasn't raced since finishing third as the favorite in the Nov. 13 Pent Up Kiss Handicap at Churchill Downs.
Dyna Da Wyna will break from the outside under jockey Robby Albarado in her first Fair Grounds start.
Mocha Queen, who defeated Dyna Da Wyna in the Pent Up Kiss by three-fourths of a length, will break from post four with jockey Brian Joseph Hernandez Jr. Hernandez, who is one of three finalists for the 2004 Eclipse Award for outstanding apprentice jockey, was aboard for the filly's last outing in a Dec. 30 prep race at Fair Grounds. Mocha Queen finished fourth in that race to Shaunavon, who will also return in the Leggio.
Michael Lauer conditions Mocha Queen for Penny Lauer, Terry and Barry Ward, and Jack Danehy. Lauer also bred the 4-year-old daughter of Cozzene
in Kentucky with Danehy, Ward, Chuck Visse, and D. Walchirk. The Pent Up Kiss was Mocha Queen's first stakes victory. She will carry 118 pounds.
James and Alice Sapara's Shaunavon will seek her first stakes victory in the Leggio. Trained by Josie Carroll, the 4-year-old daughter of El Prado
will break from post 12 under jockey Eddie M. Martin Jr. She is assigned118 pounds. Dr. K.K. Jayaraman and Dr. V. Devi Jayaraman bred Shaunavon in Kentucky.
Black Escort and Ambition Unbridled, who finished second and third, respectively, to Shaunavon in the Dec. 30 prep race, will also return in the Leggio.
