The Aug. 9 West Virginia Derby (gr. III) at Mountaineer Park has attracted a list of 69 nominations, including 13 graded stakes winners from the United States and Canada. Nominations for the 1 1/8-mile race closed July 26.

While the $600,000 West Virginia Derby will compete with such races as the Aug. 3 Jim Dandy (gr. II) at Saratoga and Haskell Invitational (gr. I) at Monmouth Park for top-class runners, the event has drawn the interest of other outstanding 3-year-olds.

According to a release from Mountaineer Park, the connections of Kentucky Cup Juvenile (gr. II) winner Soto have expressed an interest in running, along with Cleveland Gold Cup winner Cat Singer and West Coast invader Coax Kid.

The release also said Canadian standout Mobil, along with Preakness Stakes (gr. I) runner-up Midway Road and Fountain of Youth (gr. I) winner Trust N Luck are considered possible for the race.
