Sabiango was a runaway winner of Sunday's WestLB-Deutschland-Preis (Ger-I) at Dusseldorf.
Stiftung Gestut Fahrhof's 5-year-old German home-bred son of Spirit of Eagles was 3 1/2 lengths clear of Storm Trooper after taking the lead with about three-sixteenths of mile to go. Trainer Andreas Wohler's charge clocked a final time of 2:31.48 for the 1 1/2-mile feature on soft going.
Storm Trooper, third in the German Derby for trainer Andreas Schutz, was fourth in the five-horse field before rallying to reach second in the final 150 yards, 1 1/2 length ahead of pacesetter Levirat. A second Schutz starter, Aolus, was pulled up three furlongs from the finish after tracking Sabiango in third. A preliminary report said he was not seriously injured.
Sabiango, who won at odds of 17-10, was making just his 11th start. He won for the fifth time.
