Churchill Downs announced March 1 the appointment of Steve Cummins to serve as its new human resources director, responsible for the track's human resources, strategies, plans and practices.
He joins Churchill Downs as the track completes a $121 million renovation in April, finishing its transformation from a seasonal live racing attraction to a year-round facility.
Cummins has 27 years of experience in human resources in the manufacturing, food service and health care industries, according to a release from Churchill Downs. He most recently served as human resources manager at Marathon Ashland Petroleum's Illinois Refining Division in Robinson, Ill., and prior to that as director of human resources for Papa John's International's PJ Food Service in Louisville. Cummins was vice president of human resources at Louisville's Our Lady of Peace Hospital (now Caritas Peace Center).
Cummins has a bachelor's degree in journalism and a master's degree in industrial relations, both from West Virginia University. He earned the status of Senior Professional in Human Resources in 1994, and is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management and past president of the Louisville Society for Human Resource Management.
"We welcome Steve to our Churchill Downs team at a most important time in our track's history," said Steve Sexton, president of Churchill Downs. "We are developing a Churchill Downs team that is skilled, creative and responsive to the needs of our patrons. This customer-centric focus is critical to our future success and Steve will play a major role in that effort."
