Impressive Work for Candy Ride at Del Mar

American Handicap (gr. IIT) hero Candy Ride, getting ready for his next start in the $1 million Pacific Classic (gr. I), worked six furlongs in a bullet 1:11 over a fast main track at Del Mar Saturday morning.

The Argentine-bred son of Ride the Rails, who is undefeated in all five career starts, will not race before running in Del Mar's featured event on Aug. 24, according to trainer Ron McAnally.

"I caught him in in :10 and 3/5 and galloping out (seven furlongs) in :24, so that was a pretty good work," McAnally said.

"He just does it so effortlessly. He covers the ground so well and makes it look so easy. He's a good work horse, so he won't run until the Pacific Classic. He doesn't need to."

Owners Sid and Jenny Craig specifically with the Pacific Classic in mind purchased Candy Ride. A group 1 winner in his native Argentina, he won his North American debut at 1 1/16 miles on June 7 by three lengths and followed that up with a three-quarter-length score in the American at nine furlongs on the turf.

Overall Candy Ride has earned $149,149.

McAnally also sent French Stakes winner Welcome Millenium out for a half-mile work in :49 1/5 over a firm turf course. The Arnold Zetcher colorbearer was 12th in the July 5 American Oaks at Hollywood Park after losing a shoe and suffering a troubled trip, but will look to redeem herself in Aug. 2 San Clemente Handicap (gr. IIT).

"I think she likes the turf course down here," McAnally said. "It was a good work for her."

Welcome Millenium, a multiple group III-placed runner in France, has earned $100,051.
