Caliban set a track record at Ruidoso Downs Saturday while winning the Governor's Handicap, shaving two-fifths off the 7 ½ furlong mark established only last weekend. Caliban's track record is 1:29.2.
Racing for Nelda Whatley & Michael Wilson and trained by Archie Whatley, Caliban, a 6-year-old son of Marquetry, made a furious deep stretch rally to collar front runner Funny Meeting as they neared the wire.
Caliban finished a neck in front of Funny Meeting, who was four lengths clear of third place finisher Sneaker Mike.
Jockey Martin Bourdieu, who set the short-lived track record last week aboard Star Smasher, piloted Caliban to his second win in 2003. Caliban increased his career earnings by $15,660 to $153,359.
"The last time I was on this horse I made a mistake riding him and it cost me the race," Bourdieu said.
This is the eighth track record to fall in the last week at Ruidoso Downs. Five of records were set Thoroughbreds and three over the Quarter Horse strip.
