Under a well-timed ride by Heberto Castillo Jr., The Thoroughbred Corp.'s Stylish was up at the wire for a neck victory in Saturday's $100,000 Eatontown Handicap (gr. III) at Monmouth Park.
The Bill Mott-trained mare ran down Something Ventured, who finished a head in front of Sweet Deimos in the 1 1/16-mile turf test for fillies and mares.
Stylish, the 2-1 favorite in the field of nine fillies and mares, raced the distance in 1:41 3/5 over the soft turf course and paid $6, $4, and $3.20 across the board. Something Ventured, who returned $4 and $2.80, completed the $31.20 exacta. Sweet Deimos showed for $6.20 and a $238 trifecta.
Stylish began her winning bid on the final turn and endured a long stretch drive.
"The pace was unbelievable," Castillo said, referring to splits of :22 1/5 for the quarter, :46 for the half and 1:10 2/5 for the six furlongs. "She was relaxed for the first half-mile. At the three-eighths pole I made my move. My mare just kept on running at the end."
This was the second straight score for Stylish, a daughter of Thunder Gulch who won the Lady Canterbury Breeders' Cup Stakes in her previous try.
