Fabre's Martaline Captures Maurice de Nieuil

Martaline gave trainer Andre Fabre his seventh win in the Prix Maurice de Nieuil (Fr-II) at Maisons-Laffitte on Saturday. Martaline took the lead with jockey Christophe Soumillion about two furlongs from home and finishing well to defeat Westerner by three-quarters of a length.

Clety was third, another three-quarters of a length behind. Zindabad was fourth in the seven-horse field. The 1 3/4-mile event was timed in 2:55.1 on good to soft going.

Owned by Khalid Abdulla, the 4-year-old gray colt by Linamix was prominent eary, tracking Zindabad after settling into second after a half-mile. Soumillon sent Martaline to the lead midway through the straight. He was comfortably in control as Westerner drove late to edge Clety for the runner-up spot.

Juddmonte Farms bred Martaline, who is out of the Sadler's Wells mare Coraline.
