Lemon Drop Kid 'Hot to Handle' After Wednesday Work

Hall of Fame trainer Scotty Schulhofer said Lemon Drop Kid, one of the favorites for Saturday's Breeders' Cup Classic is "hot to handle right now" after his three furlong workout in :35 4/5 on Wednesday.

On Thursday, the son of Kingmambo jogged one mile, with his trainer not making any predictions for Saturday's race.

"As far as I'm concerned it's just a matter of luck," said Schulhofer, adding that he believed Lemon Drop Kid would have been the Classic favorite had he not encountered problems in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. The colt was bumped by Behrens soon after the start and had subsequent traffic problems, eventually finishing fifth.

Another top Classic contender, European Giant's Causeway, walked in the quarantine area Thursday morning after clearing quarantine on Wednesday. "He was a bit hyper yesterday so we didn't send him to the track," said trainer Aidan O'Brien said. "He's chilling down now."

O'Brien said he believes the son of Storm Cat will adapt to American racing. "The others have been trained for the race and know the style of racing here, but he did go to Southwell (in England) and went well. It's a slow sand surface and he handled it well. He's bigger and stronger than he's ever been--15 kilos (33 lbs.) heavier than his last race. He's absolutely mad for his racing. His draw is all right because he has a lot of tactical speed."
