A colt by one of the world's hottest sires, Giant's Causeway
, sold for $650,000 around lunchtime Tuesday at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July select yearling auction. Irish agent Demi O'Byrne, a member of the Coolmore Stud team, purchased the muscular chestnut colt with the flashy white blaze. Giant's Causeway stands at Ireland-based Coolmore's Kentucky division, Ashford Stud.
"He's a very good-looking horse and he compares well (with other Giant's Causeway offspring)," O'Byrne said. "He has scope; he has quality; and he's a good mover. And he has a nice pedigree."
O'Byrne was acting on behalf of Coolmore managing partner John Magnier, as well as Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith.
"I thought he might have made a bit more, but not much more," O'Byrne said. "The dam hasn't produced a stakes horse, so I thought it was about right. I thought around $650,000 or $750,000."
The colt, he added, probably will be sent to Europe to race.
The only yearling by his sire in the sale, the colt is out of the grade II-placed mare College City, an 11-year-old daughter of Carson City. College City won three times during her racing career. Other members of the family include French group I winner Imperial Beauty (who was highweighted on the European Free Handicap) along with European group III winners Midnight Air and her offspring Midnight Line. The $650,000 colt is a half-brother to two winners.
David Hager's Idle Hour Farm consigned the colt for his breeder, Marion G. Montanari of Florida.
"I'm very happy," Hager said. "When you get a horse with that kind of quality, you don't know high how it's going to go. The sales can be kind of a struggle, with all the worry, and then you get a special one like that, and you just want to sit back and enjoy it. It's so much fun to have one like that."
Said Montanari: "He's such a special horse. I wasn't quite sure where he would be (in price), but this is nice."
In other action, Kentucky-based pinhooker Maurice Miller bought a Buddha
