Dr. Jerome Torsney, Raced Champion Mac Diarmida, Dead

Dr. Jerome Torsney, whose Mac Diarmida won 12 of 14 races his championship season, died July 13 at his Montclair, N.J., home.

A 3-year-old his championship season in 1978, Mac Diarmida won such grade I turf features as the Washington, D.C., International and the Canadian International Championship Stakes, plus six other grass stakes. He exited racing with $503,184 in earnings.

Honey Fox was another of Torsney's top turf runners. The mare won nine grass stakes, including the Ramona (gr. IIT), Orchid (gr. IIT), and Black Helen (gr. IIT) Handicaps, and earned $582,256. Hall of Famer Scotty Schulhofer trained both Mac Diarmida and Honey Fox.

Torsney, an allergist, raced additional stakes winners in Europe.
