Ballet de France, a Virginia Broodmare of the Year, was euthanized Aug. 5 at Stewart Bainum's Dinwiddie Farm near Middleburg, Va. The 24-year-old daughter of Northern Dancer and her daughters generated more than $8 million for Dinwiddie. The farm bought her privately in 1989.
Bred in Kentucky by Swettenham Stud and Partners, Ballet de France raced for Swettenham owner Robert Sangster. She won two of five starts, including the C.L. Weld Park Stakes (Ire-III) as a 2-year-old.
"It was an honor to have been associated with Ballet de France all these years," said Dinwiddie general manager Bud Paul. "I was the first person she saw when she came into the world in 1981 when I foaled her as manager at Robert Sangster's Creek View Farm and I was the last person she saw when she was put to sleep."
As a broodmare, Ballet de France produced 10 named foals, seven of which were winners. They included Irish and Italian champion Muhtarram (by Alleged) and graded stakes winner Profit Column (by Private Account), dam of graded winner Final Round (by Storm Cat). Muhtarram sold for $650,000 at the 1990 Keeneland July yearling sale.
Ballet de France, who was produced from the Le Fabuleux mare Fabulous Native, was buried at Dinwiddie.
