The equine abortion rate in Kentucky fell 48% in 2003 from the previous year based on statistics compiled by the University of Kentucky's Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center. The number of aborted fetuses submitted to the LDDC examination through June was 426 compared to 823 in 2002. The LDDC released its final report for the year on July 8. It has been keeping track of abortions because of problems with mare reproductive loss syndrome (MRLS) in 2001 and 2002.
